The Write Time

My Memoir

The Write Time is a personal journey through 65 episodes, blending memories, journals, poetry, fiction, songs and reflections to explore family, work, ageing, resilience and the uncertainty of what lies ahead. At its heart is the belief that our experiences are unique, worth reflecting on and worth recording.

It invites you to explore your own story: the memories you cherish, those forgotten, and the chapters still waiting to be written.

The story behind the book…

When I retired from teaching in 2013, one of my ambitions was to write a book, but the Eureka moment was slow to arrive.

Then, in 2022, my moment of inspiration finally came — just ten days before my mam died. Chapter 1 brings that moment to life.

What’s inside?

The structure is a little unusual…

  • 65 episodes — one for each year of my life
  • Chapters that move backwards and forwards through time
  • Songs and poems as starting points for reflection
  • My reflections included with each chapter
  • Journal extracts, poetry and fiction
  • Over To You’ questions to encourage your own reflections

Why I wrote it

I have an irrational fear of dementia. I have seen the disease up close, and perhaps that is why the fear has stayed with me. It seems more prevalent today, or perhaps I am simply more aware of it.

One of my more irrational thoughts has been that, if my memory ever fails me, I might leave something behind that could help me recognise who I am
